The Kastmaster spoon is one of the most effective lures for catching all species of fish — resembling young fry that are a staple in the food chain year-round. We use these smaller versions to target perch, crappie, white bass, trout, big bluegills, and other sunfish. Also effective on inshore saltwater species. Simple techniques, any body of water, summer or winter — a year-round joy.

How to Fish

Cast out and let the spoon flutter all the way to the bottom. If no bites on the drop, raise your rod tip from 2 o’clock to noon with short wrist snaps, letting the spoon flutter back down 6–12 inches on a slack line. Repeat back to the boat. Fish weedlines, the front and back of river holes, and eddies. Experiment with long pulls and erratic snaps to trigger reaction bites. Fish usually strike on the flutter down. A small crane swivel 12–18 inches above the spoon helps reduce twist. Bonus bass, pike, and walleye are always a possibility.

To locate active fish, fan cast at different depths and repeat the retrieve speed that yields results. A slow steady retrieve works as well as a jig-and-pause — pay attention to how fish are reacting on that particular day.

Bonus Hook Tip

We include a size 6 Eagle Claw 210NM-6 open eye single hook with each bait. Swap out the treble using needle nose or split ring pliers and add a small 1" Berkley Gulp Alive Minnow or scented tail to consistently trigger panfish and gamefish commits. Add-on tails not included. Check out "Bluegills and Spoons" on YouTube from In-Fisherman TV for more ideas.
